Residents of Wayne County are being warned of an increase in Deed and Real Estate Thefts reportedly taking place in the area. According to the Wayne County District Attorney, there has been a rise in these thefts, which consist of transferring the title to someone’s home without the homeowner’s knowledge or approval. Those who successfully transfer the title under false pretenses then profit by recording the deed with the county clerk’s office, selling the property to another party and keeping the proceeds, or obtaining home equity loans and using stolen property as collateral. District Attorney Howell suggests homeowners occasionally check real estate websites like “Zillow.com” to see if their property is listed for sale. He also says, seasonal residents especially, should check to see if a “For Sale” sign has been placed on their property. Real Estate agencies are asked to remain vigilant when dealing with individuals attempting to sell property over the phone and not in person. Anyone who believes they are a victim of deed or real estate theft is asked to contact their local police, or Wayne County Detectives at 570-253-4912.
